Hiya writer friends,
After a few years of working exclusively for content clients, last month I decided to dip my toes into freelance journalism again.
Part of the reason was that I’d been working with a bunch of coaching clients, almost all of whom wanted to break into publications. In working through ideas, publications, and strategies with them, I got excited and inspired. And partly because we’ve been talking about pitching a lot in Wordling Plus and I wanted to demonstrate what I’m teaching rather than just saying it.
So we decided to do 30 Days, 30 Queries as a community—a challenge in which we send 30 pitches in 30 days.
Since I’ve been away from this world for a while and have no active relationships with my editors, I kept my goals modest: I wanted to send 30 pitches in 30 days and land assignments worth $4k from the effort.
Here’s how I did:
Pitches sent: 30 pitches (20 unique ideas)
Assignments received: 7
Money made: $4,070
I also still have at least 2 more ideas being considered, so these numbers are likely to rise.
But I’m not the only one who’s benefiting from the pitching we’re doing in Wordling Plus.
One of my students landed three assignments in a single week. She wrote to tell me: “I’m feeling really energized and inspired! All three are high-paying $1 a word places and this would’ve been A DREAM WEEK this time last year, so I’m going to make sure to celebrate.”
We’re starting a new round of pitching and 30 Days, 30 Queries on October 1. This has traditionally been one of my most popular courses, but having it as part of a membership means that we can now jump in any time and have a community to work along with.
